What Is PAT Testing?
Portable Appliance Testing, commonly known as PAT testing is the inspection and electrical testing of appliances and equipment to help determine whether they are safe to continue using.
A proper assessment includes both a formal visual inspection and, where appropriate, testing with suitable calibrated equipment. Some defects can be identified visually, while others may only become apparent through electrical testing.
Our PAT testing service can includes:
✔ Formal visual inspection of each appliance
✔ Inspection of plugs, cables and appliance casings
✔ Check for exposed wiring, damage or overheating
✔ Fuse-rating check where accessible
✔ Earth-continuity testing where applicable
✔ Insulation-resistance testing where applicable
✔ Polarity and lead testing where applicable
✔ Functional checks where appropriate
✔ Pass or fail identification
✔ Individual appliance identification
✔ Application of dated test labels
✔ Digital appliance register
✔ Clear test-results report
✔ Details of failed items and recommended action
The exact tests completed depend on the appliance’s construction, electrical class and condition.
WHY BOOK?
Maintain Electrical Safety
Electrical equipment should be maintained so that it does not present a danger. The appropriate level and frequency of inspection and testing depends on the equipment, how it is used and the environment in which it operates.
Identify Damage Early
Visual inspections and electrical tests can identify damaged plugs, unsuitable fuses, deteriorated cables, insulation problems and other safety concerns.
Maintain Clear Records
Receive an organised digital appliance register showing the items inspected, their locations and their test results.
Reduce Disruption
Testing can be arranged at a convenient time and combined with other property compliance or management services.

How Often Is PAT Testing Required?
There is no universal legal rule requiring every appliance to receive a PAT test annually.
Inspection and testing intervals should be based on risk, taking account of:
-
The type of appliance
-
How frequently it is used
-
The environment in which it is used
-
Whether it is moved regularly
-
The users of the equipment
-
Its condition and previous results
For example, equipment used on a construction site may require more frequent attention than equipment kept in a low-risk office. The HSE states that the law requires electrical equipment to be maintained to prevent danger but does not prescribe one testing frequency for every appliance.
We can help you establish a sensible retesting schedule based on the equipment and property.
